Year End Reporting Checklist: 10 Steps to Address
By: Net at Work Team
Preparing for year-end reporting happens throughout the year. However, as we approach December there are still steps we can take to be prepared for the reporting requirements for 2017 and the beginning of 2018. Here are some items to address between now and January:
- Order Year End Forms (W-2 / 1094 / 1095) – If not using Aatrix Tax Filing Service to print and distribute your forms to employees, contact your provider to obtain blank W-2’s and 1095 forms. Don’t forget to include envelopes and extra copies for reprinting lost forms!
- Review the calendar for final payroll deadlines, holiday or PTO schedules, year-end processing and filing deadlines.
- Review taxable fringe benefits as well as third party sick pay to be sure that you have accounted for them in your payroll history and reporting. Review IRS Publication 15-B, Employers Tax Guide to Fringe Benefits for more information and guidance.
- Log into the SSA website , review the materials there and update your password.
- Prepare and distribute employee communications asking employees to review their current W-4 exemptions, name, address and social security number through the company Employee Self Service site or by contacting HR.
- Make sure that employee name formats meet IRS guidelines. If employee’s names have changed during the year, make sure they have a Social Security card with their new name.
- Review changes to Social Security taxes and pension plan limits.
- Visit the Year End Center at Sage City for the latest news, links and social media streams on all aspects of Sage’s US and Canadian payroll products.
- Attend our Net at Work Year End Training Sessions on December 13 and 14th for Sage Abra Suite and Sage HRMS.
- Relax and enjoy the holidays. You’ve got this!
